James Woods was introduced to the martial arts in 1978 with the study of the internal Chinese art of Shan Hsi Hsing-I Chuan. Hsing-I emphasizes concise, powerful body movements, with a goal of uniting the efforts of the mind and body. James continued training in this art for nearly eight years, at which time he began a collegiate career at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.
During his tenure at SMU, James was introduced to the art of Aikido by Bryan Robbins, formerly of Seidokan affiliation with the late Bill Sosa Sensei. Following a year of study with Mr. Robbins in aikido and aiki-jitsu arts, James began to focus more intensely on academic pursuits.
After informal instruction in various styles (western boxing, tae kwon do, kendo, HeBei hsing-i), James found his way back to aikido. In April of 2001, he began training with Michael Park Sensei of the Aikido Silver Bridge Dojo, and has remained under his tutelage to date. During this course of study, James has also received personal instruction from Bill Sosa Sensei (International Aikido Association), Lynn Fabia Sensei (Society of Aikido Centers), and David Fabia Sensei (Society of Aikido Centers).
James currently holds the rank of Yondan (4th degree black belt) with the Society of Aikido Centers, and is the chief instructor of the Rising Spirit Aikido Center in Plano, Texas.
